Down By the Glenside
PEADAR KEARNEY
Arranged by Nancy Daily-Green © 2004
A haunting ballad describing the Irish Rising of 1798. Time and time again, brave Irish men and women fought to gain Ireland's freedom. They were at last successful in the early 1920's.
Nancy: hammered dulcimer, vocals
Dave Wilson: fiddle, cello
Verse 1
'Twas down by the Glenside I met an old woman, Aplucking young nettles nor saw I was coming;
I listened awhile to the song she was humming, Glory O! Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men.
Verse 2
Tis fifty long years since I saw the moon beaming On strong manly forms, and on eyes with hope geaming
I see them again sure thro' all my day dreaming, Glory O! Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men.
Verse 3
When I was a girl---their marching and drilling Awoke in the glenside sound awesome and trhiling,
They loved poor old Ireland and to die they were willing, Glory O! Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men.
Verse 4
Some died by the glenside, some died 'mid the stranger, And wise men have told us their cause was a failure,
But they stood by old Ireland and never feared danger, Glory O! Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men.
Verse 5
I passed on my way, God be praised that I met her, Be life long or short I shall never forget her,
We may have great men, but we'll never have better, Glory O! Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men.
